How We Blended New and Old to Create a Walkable District

The Railyard at Lambert’s Point

Location: Norfolk, Virginia // Size: 108,000 SF // Completion Date: March 2024

The Railyard at Lamberts Point showcases a harmonious blend of renovated historic buildings and thoughtfully designed, historic-compatible new structures. To preserve the district’s architectural heritage, we used materials like brick, cast stone, and metal that seamlessly match the original buildings, while integrating modern performance standards.

The district promotes walkability, with wide pedestrian pathways connecting retail spaces, offices, and public areas, creating a vibrant, community-centered experience. Parking challenges were solved with a large community parking lot tucked away (we actually store all of the stormwater underneath the parking lots), preserving street-level aesthetics and pedestrian safety without compromising accessibility.

This design approach honors the past while shaping a thriving, functional future.
